The following Excel spreadsheets contain versions of the Almagest
star catalog:
the data as found in the Almagest, including
the textual star descriptions (from G. J. Toomer, Ptolemy’sAlmagest , (London, 1984)), the matching real star
names and coordinates from the Yale Bright Star Catalog.
as above, but all star coordinates are adjusted for
precession to 129 BC. For the Almagest stars, -2 2/3° is subtracted from the ecliptical
longitude. Also included is the degree of the ecliptic rising, setting, or
culminating as each star rises or sets, plus the degree of the ecliptic
culminating when the star culminates.
as above, but all coordinates are now equatorial
(except for the degrees of the ecliptic, of course) and adjusted for 129
BC.
as above, but all true coordinates are now ecliptical
and adjusted for 1270 AD.
